This Week In Healthcare 20th April 2026

The healthcare job market is shifting FAST. Here’s what affects YOUR next move:

Hospitals increasing digital investments. More hiring in: Informatics, data roles, clinical systems.

Remote roles remain strong

Pharma & research pathways expanding

Remote healthcare roles holding steady: Case management, Utilization review, Care coordination. Still strong options beyond bedside

Clinical research & pharma roles expanding. More demand for: Trial coordinators, Drug safety, Regulatory roles

HCA Florida Ocala just announced a $200M expansion—adding 62 beds, new 7-story surgical tower, 470,000+ sq ft. That’s 70+ NEW clinical positions plus broad support roles. Construction starting THIS YEAR. If you’re in Florida or willing to relocate, applications are likely open soon. Expansion = hiring surge.

Hospital-at-home programs exploding nationwide. CMS extended reimbursement waiver through 2030 (was set to expire). Baptist Health Jacksonville, UMass Memorial, dozens more launching or expanding programs in 2026. This creates an entirely NEW job category: acute care RNs providing hospital-level care in patients’ homes. 24/7 monitoring, daily visits, remote tech. If you want OUT of traditional bedside but want to stay clinical, this is your path.

Nursing schools expanding BUT won’t help shortage for 2-3 years. New programs, more seats, more funding announced in 2026—but these students won’t graduate until 2027-2028 AT EARLIEST. For CURRENT nurses: your job security and negotiation leverage stay HIGH through 2028+. Don’t let headlines about “expansion” make you think the shortage is over. It’s not.

Internal float pools replacing external travel agencies. Hospitals realized they’re losing millions to staffing agencies, so they’re creating their OWN internal “travel teams.” Pay: higher than staff RNs, lower than peak external travel, but you work for ONE health system consistently. Some internal float RNs earning $145K. Check if your hospital has an internal resource pool—could be your path to six figures without leaving your employer.

Teaching hospitals expanding residency programs. HCA Florida Ocala just matched 65 new residents (181 total for 26-27 academic year). Teaching hospitals = MORE opportunities for experienced nurses/providers: preceptor roles, clinical educator positions, leadership tracks. Academic partnerships with UCF, other universities creating career ladders.
55% of healthcare workers plan to switch jobs by end of 2026 (Harris Poll). Drivers: burnout, pay gaps, inflexible schedules. Translation: massive hiring competition coming in next 8 months. If you’re STAYING at your current job, negotiate NOW before your employer panics about retention. If you’re LEAVING, timing is perfect—employers desperate to fill gaps before mass exodus.

For doctors, nurses, pharmacists, CRNAs, and other healthcare professionals – It’s not about working harder; It’s about positioning smarter.

It’s time to make your move.
